What Is Bitcoin Pizza Day And Why Is Everyone Talking About It?

If you’ve been on any cryptocurrency related forum or follow someone on social media who frequently posts about the world of blockchain and cryptocurrency, you are sure to have heard of Bitcoin Pizza Day by now.

So what is this thing everyone is talking about? Bitcoin Pizza Day refers to an important milestone in the history of Bitcoin. Back in 2010, on this very day, the 22nd of May, the first ever real-life Bitcoin transaction took place.

The guy behind the first ever purchase made with Bitcoin is Laszlo Hanyecz, a programmer, and early Bitcoin enthusiast. He arranged through the Bitcoin forum, Bitcointalk.org, a deal in which someone ordered two large pizzas from his local Papa John’s for Laszlo. In exchange for doing so, Laszlo sent the guy who ordered the pizzas for him, ten thousand Bitcoins.

Back then, these 10,000 Bitcoins were worth about 60 dollars, but today they are worth an incredible $82 million. These two pizzas have therefore been called the most expensive pizzas ever. So despite the purchase not being made directly to the restaurant in Bitcoin, this is still seen as the first time Bitcoin has been used to purchase something in real life and is, therefore, an anniversary in the world of crypto.

One of the people celebrating this crypto milestone is the founder of Litecoin, Charlie Lee, he invited anyone to join him for lunch at one of his favorite pizza spots in New York City.
